Located on the banks of the Tâmega river, Amarante is one of the most beautiful cities in Portugal, a must-see destination in the district of Porto (less than 70km away), rich in history, art, gastronomy, and nature. Inhabited since prehistoric times, the rich history of Amarante is inseparable from the figure of S. Gonçalo, patron saint of the city celebrated on the first weekend of June, and that gives its name to the emblematic bridge that crosses the Tâmega river, the site of one of the most iconic and striking episodes of national defense during the Napoleonic Wars.
Amarante is rich in tradition and sacred monuments, such as the Church and Convent of S. Gonçalo; S. Domingos Church where you can find the Museum of Sacred Art, and S. Pedro Church. The Casa da Calçada, the Solar dos Magalhães and the Amadeo de Souza Cardoso Municipal Museum are other places to visit.
For nature lovers, the Abobadela Mountain with its impressive megalithic structures, the Amarante Forest Park, the Ribeirinho Park, and the Aurora River Beach are the ideal places to relax.
Amarante’s gastronomy is another attraction of the city, the land of kid, tripe, stew, and codfish. The local sweets are represented by the foguetes, the lérias, the papos de anjo and the São Gonçalo.
